I think the way we have been treating asylum seekers coming to this country has degraded our humanity. The way a society treats less fortunate people is the true measure of our worth. |

We are supposed to be living in a society where we are innocent until proven guilty. We are outraged when Australians arrested in foreign countries are treated as guilty before they are tried, yet we do exactly the same thing here – to children! |

The longer this type of "detention" goes on the more appalling things get. Try looking up "concentration camp" in the Macquarie dictionary, you might be surprised. |

Mandatory detention for indefinite periods of time, both in Australia and other places such as Christmas Island and Nauru, is a breach of international conventions to which Australia is a signatory. The people in detention should be released. |

For too long we have seen the debilitating effects of indefinite, non-reviewable detention and temporary protection. Asylum seekers have not broken any laws when they sought protection in Australia. They should not be treated like criminals. |
