Why not use 'detention villages' much like the old migrant centres? Let the 'inmates' live in small family homes or 'share houses' and work in the community thus maintaining dignity and giving purpose. |

Failure to support this Bill would be an abrogation of your responsibilities to all those of your constituents whose families came to Australia escaping some sort of oppression - and in many ways that is all non-indigenous Australians. |

Australians are basically humane and compassionate. We badly need our politicians to place these values above political expediency and provide genuine leadership. I want to again be proud to be an Australian! |

I cannot call myself a proud citizen of this country while the government locks up refugees and leaves them to rot in prison camps. Release the children and women and end mandatory detention NOW! |

Detainee claims have proven to be genuine 80%(ABS). The problem is verification of paperwork (false identities allow them safe departure) . Give them the benefit of the doubt. Stop mandatory detention. |

In my view it is rerehensible that private membrs bills on consience issues can be gagged before any debate in the house. Are we a democracy? or not! |

Mandatory detention itself is inhumane and self-defeating to Australia. The mental health effects on children and adults alike are horrific. Stop this obscenity now before more lives are destroyed. |

I do not agree with the Governments argument that children are free to leave detention at any time as long as they leave Australia. I believe that whether it is the parent or the government keeping the child locked up, it is still child abuse.

I support the proposal to make Australia's detention laws more compassionate. Locking people up indefinitely is cruel and creates ongoing problems. The policy reflects badly on Australia. |

The imprisonment of people whose only crime is an attempt to escape a life of oppression and persecution is an affront to the values of compassion and a fair go for all that Australians hold so dear. |

The real damning point is that we're a wealthy enough country with the resources to accept refugees.Who would actually leave their homes unless they had extenuating circumstances?Very few. |

The issue is no longer one of deterring 'people smugglers'and protecting our borders. It is an issue of Human Rights and Human Dignity. It is not a crime to come to Australia seeking refuge from violence and war. |

I find it offensive that Australians accept the locking up of people who have committed no crime. It remains legal to enter a country and ask for asylum. It is a dark period of our history and will continue to haunt us. |

The refugees are sacrificial lambs for the 10% who voted Hanson who keep the govt in office, admitted by the PM. Since we have got to that level of (dis)honesty, it is high time to undo this this farce of a policy, a dangerous precedent for civil rights. |
